Kalacha Camp

Deep in the Chalbi Desert near the Ethiopian frontier, Kalacha Camp sits on the edge of an oasis. It is a simple camp, built of local materials.

Activities

Photographic opportunities are fantastic, with the beautiful and unusual desert scenery and constantly changing lights and colours.

At Kalacha camp one can:

  • Watch herds of livestock watering at the oasis
  • Watch huge flights of sandgrouse arrive at the water holes from surrounding desert areas in the early mornings
  • Visit the village to gain an insight into Gabbra traditions
  • Go to Kalacha town where there is a small Catholic church – the interior lined with amazing biblical paintings
  • Enjoy Gabbra dances and plays
  • Visit ancient rock art paintings of giraffe, elephant and antelope
  • Visit the Coreli Springs in heart of the Chalbi desert to witness the timeless traditions of the Rendille people
  • Take sundowners in the desert on the edge of the lava flows
  • Go sandgrouse shooting - seasons are 1st February to 31st March and 1st July to 31st October
