Human-Elephant conflict in Kenya’s Laikipia region

Elephants in the Mutara ranch dam

West Laikipia, Sept 2015

This is the reality of #human-elephant conflict in some parts of #Laikipia – where people live along side these animals, and space for both species has become a serious issue.

After a night of crop raiding, 7 #elephants were accosted by angry crowds and sought refuge in the center of Mutara dam.

Hours later, unable to escape and exhausted, KWS, 51 Degrees and Space for Giants worked tirelessly to break up the mob. Tropic Air was called in with the #helicopter to help control the crowds, and make way for the elephants to move out of the dam.  Wildlife_helicopter_kenya_IMG_7325 Wildlife_helicopter_kenya_IMG_7663 Mutara_Wildlife_helicopter_kenya

All 7 elephants are safe, and no one was hurt. We are grateful to the amazing conservation organisations that work in the #Ewaso ecosystem, dedicated to creating space for wildlife and finding solutions to human-wildlife conflict.
