Ethiopia highlights

During a helicopter safari in late April, our helicopter pilot Mario Magonga sent these pictures that captured the spirit of why Ethiopia is so special.

The spectacular Tekeze River that runs through dramatic arid landscape, not too unlike the Grand Canyon, has created one of the world’s deepest canyons. A tributary of the Nile, the Tekeze is home to Africa’s highest dam with a 188-meter arch walled that was constructed in 2009 and generates hydroelectric power for an estimated 80m people.

A church in the sky! The most inaccessible place of worship on earth, perched on top of a vertical spire in Ethiopia’s northern highlands, Tigray region. Carved by hand from the rock in which it stands, this 5th Century monastery called AbunaYemata is decorated in exquisite frescoes, and is so sacred that mothers bring their newborn babies up here to be baptised, and bodies have been laid to rest on this mountain.
